  • 437: Twelve Minute Convos w/ Havilland Maxwell

Havilland Maxwell-

Havilland Maxwell is the author of In Real Life…I’m a Creative Badass. By day she’s a voice over and on-camera talent. By night, she’s a creative encourager to freelancers and solopreneurs.

She got her start in voice over by recording on-hold messages. The first company she voiced for didn’t have a fancy recording set-up, so she held the old school desk phone up to her ear and hoped she didn’t mess up, or she’d have to start all over again. After that first “Press 1 for Billing,” “Press 2 for Human Resources,” she fell into a long lasting relationship with voiceover.

Nearly 10 years after those first voice overs, she’s had the pleasure of voicing spots for Lowe’s, Apple, MasterCard, Nicorette, Capital One, United Way, Exederm, and many others. She continued working for “the man” while freelancing on the side for years, until she was so miserable she couldn’t stand it. So what do they say? If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen! Well that’s exactly what she did – and set out to embrace the unknown world of creative freelancing. She packed up her portable heater, her favorite pen, and hasn’t looked back since.

She’s still a voice over talent, and has had some pretty cool gigs in front of the camera too. She’s also created an online course for creative freelancers about how to survive separation from cubicle life and thrive as a freelancer.

When she’s not talking to herself for a client, or watching 70’s & 80’s sitcoms, she loves strolling through bookstores, where she sniffs the pages of actual books! She also loves to snack and has a special place in her heart for baked macaroni and cheese southern sweet tea!

If you’re a freelancer, or a solopreneur, you can sign up for her free course Networking for Freelancers, at http://www.FreelanceWithoutFear.com or you can you can find encouragement on your journey by checking her out on Instagram @havillandmaxwell.
