Born into a family of determined survivors, Grace’s early life was shaped by the strength of elders who endured the Jim Crow South. Raised during the civil rights movement, she learned the importance of advocacy, community, and the power of voice. These roots became the foundation of a life dedicated to equity, justice, and empowering others to reach their full potential.
From Law to Leadership
What began as a high school job in a law library turned into a passion for justice. Grace earned her law degree and began her career as a Law and Education Policy Analyst, ultimately founding her own law practice. Balancing single motherhood with the demands of her profession, she built a thriving career as a respected attorney and legal strategist.
In 2000, she transitioned to federal service, joining the Social Security Administration and later serving 15 years as an Administrative Judge with the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board. Her deep legal knowledge and dedication to fairness continue today through her role as Of Counsel at Gilbert Employment Law, where she mentors new attorneys and advises on complex cases.

She is joyfully married to her UVA Law School sweetheart, Ron Carter, and together they share a vibrant, blended family of five children, three grandchildren (with a fourth on the way), and one great-grandchild.
