As a vocal coach, Tisa Yonts creates a blueprint for each student’s personal training. Students learn how to harness their “best voice” with vocal visualization. Students are taught about what they take into their vocal registers, such as nerves or the desire to sound like someone other than who they are.
“Your voice needs to come from the diaphragm, not your neck or your shoulders. It comes from your inner core. Your feet go down through the earth and your head goes up to the heavens. It’s like karate. You are doing a stand and you are balanced and no one can push you over.”
Tisa Yonts values all singers and said that something she teaches everyone, whether they want to perform karaoke, audition, or sing rock, pop, opera, jazz, etc. – is mindset.
“If someone says, ‘why don’t you sing a song,’ people start breathing shallow, their heart rate picks up and by the time they get up to sing their voice is not there,” Yonts said. “I take them through that mindset, whether it comes on five minutes or two hours before their singing event, so that they know they can rely on their instincts and intuition to trust that they are the boss. There is a discipline long before one gets up on stage.”
Tisa Yonts has relied on her own mindset when singing, especially at her stepfather’s funeral. “I cried the whole way to his funeral. He was ‘the father’ when I grew up. When it came time to sing, I knew what to do to make my voice get past the emotion of that.”
Tisa’s Target Transformation business offers one-on-one vocal instruction as well as weekly group training with performance workshops available. Her assistant, Jessie Randolph, has her degree in Voice and Independent Artist Production with special focus on Vocal Coaching from the Musician’s Institute. In addition, Tisa will offer a choral-type group for students ages nine through twelve. “With an emphasis on fun!” she laughed.
“For group voice lessons we spend an hour and a half,” Yonts said. “The first hour is instruction and for the last half hour, parents and friends are invited to come early and hear the students perform.”
“I get people to open up and sing, to find their spark – to start a little bit at a time until they see themselves shining through.”
“Target Transformation is about finding what you love and overcoming the obstacles that keep you from being the ‘you’ that your wildest dreams want you to be,” Tisa said. “Even if it is moving a whole mountain, one shovel at a time.”
